The Shell Processor was designed and modified to accommodate all manner of shells, including oysters, mussels, clams and conch. This is done by using a vibrating hopper with a manually adjustable feed, which transports material onto a 12” diameter x 16′ long screw auger, then delivering a metered flow of shells into our 24″ x 16″ standard hammer mill.
Turn-Key Shell Processor
This was a fun R&D project when a major shell fish grower approached us with the need to grind oyster shells. Milled shells are then re-purposed for use in landscaping mixtures, as chicken feed additive, and as a limestone alternative in cement mixtures and wastewater treatment facilities due to their high calcium carbonate content. Used shells become profitable, reducing disposal costs and creating additional, environmentally-conscious revenue streams for shell processors.

Check out videoContact Us for more informationThe primary components of the Shell Processor are:
- Vibrating Hopper – The vibrating hopper is designed to accept a full tote of shells at one time. An adjustable outlet door allows the user to control the feed rate of material that vibrates out of the hopper and into the auger.
- Feeder Auger – The auger moves shells from the hopper to the hammer mill, and meters the feed rate as well. A variable frequency drive allows the user to speed or slow down the feed rate for optimal performance.
- 24" x 16" Hammer Mill – The hammer mill is the workhorse of the system, and grinds the shells down to a fine product. A screen in the bottom of the mill has slots or holes which are made to meet the user’s specifications.
